How To - Replace Volume control in Late Pontiac Stereos PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 1
PoorBest

Thanks to RWDPLZ aka RWL3 for this article on replacing the volume control knob on late model Pontiac Stereos.

Sign the knob needs replacing: random volume changes when moving the knob

Additional info: The part number for the replacement bulb for the display is GM # 16208443 , for information on replacing this bulb with a cheaper and readily available bulb go here: http://fierodomain.com/content/view/261/1/

Okay, I took it apart again and took some pictures to try and explain it. This is the part you want to replace:

And this is how you get it out:

First, you need to take the faceplate off the stereo. I assume you're talking about the UP3 Delco stereo?

Begin by GENTLY prying the inner part of the tabs outward. There are two on each side of the unit. I found it easier to start on the passenger side of the unit. Here's four of them. I used a standard size flat blade screwdriver.

Once you carefully pull the face outward, you'll see it's attached to a ribon cable. The ribbon cable is attached to the board on both sides of the clip by two small black arms. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to pry one side off

Now the face is free, set the main part of the unit aside. The volume and tune knobs are on the same circuit board from the first pic, shown here with the arrow pointing to it

In order to seperate the circuit board from the face, you need to unscrew all seven hex bolts holding it in, and remove the volume knob, tune knob, and all the equalizer sliders (the knobs and sliders pull off from the front). When removing the circuit board from the face, make sure to hold the face facing downward so all the buttons don't fall out.

Here's the knob circuit board again, in place on the board

And the knobs and sliders removed

Now the only thing holding the knobs in are two nuts that go around the knob shafts, which also have washers on them. The tuner knob has a black plastic washer. Undo these, and unplug the knob circuit board from the back.

Installation is reverse of removal.

The number printed on mine is 231C549. The numbers on the one I got from the cassette layer were 231B557. Since the numbers didn't match and there were slight differences in the circuit board, I didn't risk replacing it. Kru might sell them though? Otherwise I have no idea where to get them. Finding the display bulb was painful enough.
