How To - Replace The Fiero Calipers PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 0
PoorBest

Thank you to BobadooFunk for this article on replacing the Pontiac Fiero Calipers.

ll start with a basic job, a caliper change.

when you have good tires and you feel you car pull to one side, and it gets wore when you push on the brake, you might have a stuck caliper! heres how you replace em!

caliper price : for the 84 front calipers it ran $23 at pepboys with an $18 core (they charge you $23+$18, then give you $18 back when you brong back your old caliper)

tools:

  • jack
  • cross wrench (or whatever you have to remove tires)
  • ratchet
  • 11mm socket
  • 10mm cresent wrench

all above are basics.. youll probably have to buy this at the parts store...

  • 47mm TORX socket (get a small set while youre getting it cause you need other ones for other repairs/mods)

Step 1: Wheels

make sure car is in park/gear.

block any tires you are NOT changing the caliper of for saftey.

loosen the lug nuts of the tire/caliper you are attacking.

jack up that tire

finish taking off lugs

remove tire

this is what you see...

Step 2: remove brake fluid screw

it is 11mm in Alex's 84 2m4

Step 3:remove rubber dust protectors and bolts in them

if i remember correctly they are 47mm TORX bit (84 2m4)

Step 4: remove bolts and sleeves from old caliper

i just used a small prybad and tapped with a hammer, slid out with ease, push into new one

Step 5: put pads on caliper

it is highly recommended you not only get new pads when you do a caliper, but that you also do atleast both sides whether it be front or back, as long as both right and left are done (this does not mean new calipers on both sides, but at least new pads)

i dont have a pic of new pads, but here is pic of what was there

take off outside one first, easy to do, might need 2 phillips heads or somethinf, just pry metal off the caliper a bit and they slide right off.. easy..

Step 6: put it back on!

self explanitory.. some recommend lock-tite on the torx bolts, a sealant type substance that helps keep your bolts in place so they dont fall out while driving, you put it around the treads.

Step 7: IM BLEEDING!!

ok well not you persay...

10mm bleeder screw

of those 3, its the small middle one. for this step you need a partner, and i also suggest a bleeding kit, available at i think all autoparts stores.. it looks like a cup youd put a urin sample into, with 2 nips and one of those has a hose that goes into the cup and that same one, connects right on the bleeder screw.

fill urin sample cup 3/4's with new brake fluid

open bleeder screw like one rotation

have partener SLOWLY press brake pedal

close bleeder screwer

have partner release slowly

repeat till you no longer see air bubbles coming out of fluid. and tighten bleeder screw

Step 8: tire back on

if youre NEW to cars.. and Fieros have a 5 star bolt pattern, the way i was taught to put a tire on was the star pattern

with tire still off of ground, tighten one bolt (doesnt have to be super tight yet)

then tighten bolt most opposite of that one

continue on so that as you tighten, you make a star

lower car

re-tighten bolts in same sequence, this ensures tire seat properly on rotor.

Step 9: Clean up!

(my grandfather always said a job is never done till youve cleaned up! )

DONE!!
