Thank you to Avengador1 from www.FieroDotCom.com for this excellent article on setting the timing in your Pontiac Fiero.
4 Cylinder.

6 Cylinder.
The timing is done by shorting the "A" and "B" terminals (ground and diagnostic terminals) of the ALDL terminal. This is located under the cover for the cigarette lighter.

You can also use this terminal to supply 12 volts to run your fuel pump if you suspect that the relay is defective, but that is another story, now back to the write up.
Warm your engine up to operating temperature before you short the terminals together. Shorting the terminals prevent the ECM from advancing the timing. Sorta like when you tuned your old caburated car and blocked the vacuum line to the distributor. You can use a paperclip to do this.
Once the terminals are shorted together and the engine is running again, it is time to check the timing. Check your decklid sticker for the proper amount of degrees BTDC required for your application. You will be checking the timing at the number 1 and number 4 cylinder sparkplug wires. You then take the average of these two numbers and that will give you your actual timing. Adjust the timing by loosening the hold down bolt at the base of the distributor. Rotate the distributor and recheck your timing again. Do this till you have the correct timing.
Here is what the timing marks look like for the V6. Yours will be on the opposite side of the harmonic balancer from does of mine. I have a different timing cover than the stock one, but the timing marks should be the same for yours. Each peak is 4 degrees of timing with 2 degrees of timing in every valley. The largest valley is 0 degrees BTDC.

Once you have the right timing, tighten the hold down bolt of the distributor and remove the jumper from the ALDL terminal, you are done.
