How To - Replace the Fiero Distributor PDF Print E-mail

Thank you to Avengador1 of www.FieroDotCom.com for this excellent article on replacing the Fiero distributor

I have been wanting to replace my distributor for a while since I found there was an upgraded design. This week I went looking around to find one to do this. I ended up finding one in Advance auto parts and it cost me about $174 including taxes and the core charge. Here is what it looks like.

The first step is to remove the distributor cap and unplug the cables from the ignition module on the distributor. This will give you a little more room to pull the distributor out. I also made some templates to show me the position of the rotor and the distributor body before I pulled it out. You can make some alignment lines with masking tape and a pen to show which way things should be pointing.

There is a 15 mm bolt and a bracket at the base of the distributor that needs to be removed so that the distributor can be pulled out.

You may need to pry on the distributor to free it so it can be pulled out. I used a small crowbar I have to do this. There is a bolt stud just below the cylinder number 1 position you can use for leverage. Once the distributor moves up a bit it will be free. Make sure you note where the rotor is pointing before you remove the distributor. This will help put the new one back in the same position as the rotor will rotate almost a quarter turn when you pull the distribuotr up. That is why I made a template of where the rotor was pointing when the distributor was in and I noted where it was pointing when it was out.
Here you can see the new distributor next to the old one.

Here is the new one installed.

Reinstall the distributor cap and hold down bolt and bracket but leave it loose enough to be able to rotate the distributor. Now is the time to use the templates or alignment marks to make sure all is positioned properly, if you did everything right the car should start. Let the engine reach operating temperature then turn it off. You then need to short the "A" and "B" terminals of the ALDL.

Follow my procedure on setting the timing found here. http://fierodomain.com/content/view/175/61/
Once the timing is set you can turn the engine off, remove the jumper, and do a final tightening down of the distributor. You are now done.
