I am considering the purchase of an '84 Sport with the 4spd manual. Can anyone tell me the major differences in the base and Sport models? Best I can tell it is the gearing. Any idea what to expect out of this car as far as fuel economy (assuming everything checks out; it has been parked for some time)? Also, any major problem areas to look for? I'll verify that it runs and doesn't overheat, etc, but I have little intimate knowledge of what to look for with the P-Body. Thanks!   Trysten

hey there!
things to look for before buying:
rust at the bottom of the "frame" where motor is
 headlight operation
overheating exhaust manifold
engine knock-bad connectinng rods were put in at the factory and they'd break thru crankcase on exaust side creating a fire.if it's got a bunch o miles it may have had the rods changed
tach operation
smooth shifting
coolant hose from radiator to motor under car-a bit of anchilles heel for fieros
radiator condition.
I got an 86 that's a lot of fun, minor bugs were worked out but I like it.20-25mpg?not bad,not real good either.manual transmissions are solid too.

Axman covered what you need to check pretty well, I have an article on buying a Fiero that you may find helpful:

As i found out the hard way,any car sitting for long periods of time tends to accelerate deterioration in everyway.I'd get it checked by a mechanic, and after buying,i'd change all fluids.
