Watch for rust!

Just because Fiero's have composite bodies doesn't mean they can't rust. Don't end up in the same predicament as me. Just because it looks like this on the outside:
Doesn't mean it won't look like this underneath:
Whenever you are looking at a Fiero some good place to easily check for rust are:
In the trunk, lift up the carpet to see the corners, like in the above pic
Around the battery tray, rot from the wheelwells can spread and be seen here
Look underneath, reach under and feel the edges of the frame
Open the hood and check the spare tire compartment

hey there railshot, thanks for posting
I was pretty pissed off when I pulled the car apart and found all that rust, and was in no mood to go about repairing it right after I bought it
Maybe if it was a rare model I would have put some more time into it. As it is, it went to a good cause, quite a bit of it is now on my dad's Indy, and some of it will be used for an interior project for my Formula, and some is for sale.
All in all it will be worth the $500 i paid for it, just not in the way I had hoped.

I'm in the same boat....I'm guessing 5 more years and this frame will be history.
BUT, in Alberta they don't use salt on the roads. What kills the cars out there is the cold-induced wear on the mechanicals. Here in Ontairio, either the salt or collisions get them long before they are mechanically toast.
So, I will end up getting one from out west with a good frame, and spend a summer swapping over the good parts off of this one, then use the new electronic rust protection as well as yearly undercoatings to keep the good frame good.

I've heard about those electronic rust protection devices. Do you know how well they really work? I've seen them for sale in JC Whitney magazine and was considering buying one for my Formula.

The problem here in New England is all the salt on the roads, it really wreaks havoc on our cars. My Formula is in much better condition, you can just see it in the last pic. It sat in someone's yard for 7 years so didn't get as much exposure.

Just getting out of the road salt season here, seems my Formula made it through okay. One season of this crap really eats away at a car.
Don't have to worry about floods here though, fortunately.

I just got an 86 gt. It has some trunk rust with two little rust through under the rear frame rail. Other then that it looks like its in good shape underneath. I'm going to pull the fender well on both sides to check for any hidden rust as well as the front wheel wells. Before winter hits I'm going to get a good undercoat job done for added protection. I still need to see if the battery has caused any damage. I'm hoping its no. I live in western Maryland we do get some snow here but its usually light. My car was originally from Indiana so thats where i suspect that the rust started. It looks like the previous owners 3 owners took good care of it.

Not nearly as bad. Cars will last forever outside of the salt area. Stuff they're dumping on the roads eats right through our frames
